This qualification is ideal for learners wishing to develop practical, transferable skills in English in order to work confidently, effectively and independently in life.
It is suitable for a wide range of individuals and is fundamental to the successful completion of various wider qualifications and frameworks, such as an Apprenticeship where a previous achievement of GCSE (or equivalent) may be below requirements.

Functional skills build upon the success of learners, benefiting them in a number of different areas:
In higher education – Competence in the core skills supports student progression and develops students’ capacity for independent learning.
At work – Employees who gain functional skills are able to make a positive contribution to the workplace, with practical experience of teamwork and the presentation and assessment of ideas.
At home – Running a home and bringing up a family can be a challenge for anyone. Functional skills help learners to access the range of services available to them.
In the community – Functional skills will enable learners to develop and secure the broader range of aptitudes, attitudes and behaviours that will enable them to make a positive contribution to the communities in which they live and work.

The objectives of this qualification are to help learners to:
• apply their knowledge and understanding to everyday life
• engage competently and confidently with others
• solve problems in both familiar and unfamiliar situations
• develop personally and professionally as positive citizens who can actively contribute to society

Competence in Functional Skills English it is broadly about being able to:
Select/read and understand/compare texts; write a range of texts; present information clearly and in a logical sequence; use correct grammar; use correct spelling and punctuation; take part in discussions and allow for and respond to input from others; prepare for and contribute with ideas and opinions; adapt contributions to suit the audience; present information / ideas clearly using appropriate language.

Learners sit computer-based assessments in controlled conditions in addition to being assessed by one of our qualified assessors in speaking and listening skills. They are provided with learning materials to support their learning.
