Functional Skills
This qualification is ideal for learners wishing to develop practical, transferable skills in mathematics in order to work confidently, effectively and independently in life.
It is suitable for a wide range of individuals and is fundamental to the successful completion of various wider qualifications and frameworks, such as an Apprenticeship where a previous achievement of GCSE (or equivalent) may be below requirements.Functional skills build upon the success of learners, benefiting them in a number of different areas:
In higher education – Competence in the core skills supports student progression and develops students’ capacity for independent learning.
At work – Employees who gain functional skills are able to make a positive contribution to the workplace, with practical experience of teamwork and the presentation and assessment of ideas.
At home – Running a home and bringing up a family can be a challenge for anyone. Functional skills help learners to access the range of services available to them.
In the community – Functional skills will enable learners to develop and secure the broader range of aptitudes, attitudes and behaviours that will enable them to make a positive contribution to the communities in which they live and work. The objectives of this qualification are to help learners to:
• apply their knowledge and understanding to everyday life
• engage competently and confidently with others
• solve problems in both familiar and unfamiliar situations
• develop personally and professionally as positive citizens who can actively contribute to society

Competence in Functional Skills mathematic is broadly about being able to:
Recognise a situation which has aspects that can be solved using mathematics; select the mathematical information to use and decide which methods and tools to use using the appropriate mathematical procedures; examine patterns and relationships; find results and solutions; interpret the results and solutions; draw conclusions in the light of the situations; consider the appropriateness and the accuracy of the results and conclusions; choose an appropriate language and form of presentation to provide the results and solutions.
Learners sit computer-based assessments in controlled conditions. They are provided with learning materials to support their learning.
